Europe Is Sinking Its Teeth into the AMR Challenge

Time is fast running out for us to develop vital new antibiotics to avert, what Lord Jim O’Neill, Chair of the UK’s Antimicrobial Resistance team, defined as an international crisis. In fact, Lord O’Neill has suggested that by 2050, a drug-resistant infection will kill someone every three seconds, “unless we act now”. Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron put it even more bluntly, suggesting that, without action, we would be looking at “an almost unthinkable scenario, where antibiotics no longer work and we are cast back into the dark ages of medicine”.

European Health Forum Gastein, Demographics and Diversity in Europe - New Solutions for Health

The EHFG provides a platform for discussion on which various stakeholders from the field of health policy-making come together to discuss the next steps for a healthier Europe. Over the years, the conference has become the leading annual health policy event in the EU. Participants and speakers come from government and administration, business and industry, and civil society, as well as science and academia.

This year, it is time for the 19th European Health Forum Gastein: “Demographics and Diversity in Europe - New Solutions for Health”. Europe faces unprecedented demographic change, and new solutions are needed to maintain sustainable health systems. Some of the underlying trends are: increased life-expectancy; changing fertility patterns; and internal and external migration.
