UN Declaration Should Be Another Nail in the Coffin of AMR

Prominent Russian economist, and former economic advisor to Mikhail Gorbachev, the last General Secretary of the Soviet Union, Abel Gyozevich Aganbegyan once declared: “You only find complete unanimity in a cemetery.” Not so – if the UN’s reaffirmation of its resolve to tackle anti-microbial resistance, announced this week at its High Level Meeting on AMR, is anything to go by. In fact – and somewhat ironically – it is the very commitment of all 193 member states to work at national, regional, and global levels on this issue that should help reverse the increasing death toll and save people from an early grave.

European Health Forum Gastein, Demographics and Diversity in Europe - New Solutions for Health
From 28/09/2016 to 30/09/2016 (Bad Hofgastein, Austria)

The EHFG provides a platform for discussion on which various stakeholders from the field of health policy-making come together to discuss the next steps for a healthier Europe. Over the years, the conference has become the leading annual health policy event in the EU. Participants and speakers come from government and administration, business and industry, and civil society, as well as science and academia.

This year, it is time for the 19th European Health Forum Gastein: “Demographics and Diversity in Europe - New Solutions for Health”. Europe faces unprecedented demographic change, and new solutions are needed to maintain sustainable health systems. Some of the underlying trends are: increased life-expectancy; changing fertility patterns; and internal and external migration. We invite you to discuss how these and other demographic challenges can be turned into opportunities at the EHFG 2016. ‘Without IMI this would have never happened’ – an interview with U-BIOPRED’s Peter Sterk

U-BIOPRED was one of the first IMI projects to launch back in 2009. Now the project, which focused on severe asthma, is drawing to a close. In an interview with the IMI Programme Office, the project’s scientific coordinator, Peter Sterk of the University of Amsterdam, explains how the project has increased our understanding of severe asthma and how researchers are already using this knowledge in the development of new treatments. In the next 40 years, the world will see tremendous changes in demographics. The elderly population will double in Western countries, triple in Asia and quadruple in Africa. By 2025 more than 20% of Europeans will be 65 or over, with a particularly rapid increase in the number of over 80s. Greater life expectancy is clearly an achievement to celebrate, but if Europeans are living longer, that also means we are at increased risk of developing some physical, sensory and mental diseases during our lives.
