Patient-centered innovation: Can Europe lead the way?

We can’t make true progress on unmet medical needs unless we understand what the patients themselves think they need or say is missing from their treatment options.

Since a young age growing up in Italy, the workings of the human body have fascinated me — a curiosity that brought me to medical research. I’ve always wanted to help people. And through discovering new medicines, we can potentially help millions of patients.

What drives me — and so many other scientists in Europe and around the globe — is a desire to find new therapies that will improve people’s lives, especially in areas where there is currently an unmet need.

IMAGINE if Europe was a leader in life sciences

Europe has great potential, a highly skilled workforce, cutting-edge science and world-renowned academic institutions. However, in recent years, investment has grown faster in other parts of the world. 

To restore Europe’s position as a leader in life sciences, President von der Leyen has called for a Strategy for European Life Sciences.

Europe has the potential. And now the ambition. It is time to act.

IHI launches Call 10

Today, IHI launches Call 10, committing €48 million to tackle PFAS in the health sector through:

  • Mapping PFAS usage across the sector.
  • Driving initiatives to reduce reliance on PFAS.
  • Identifying safer alternatives to protect both health and the environment.
EFPIA and MedTech members will provide in-kind contributions covering half of this investment. Together, we’re paving the way toward a healthier, more sustainable future.

Rethinking Alzheimer’s Disease Pathway: From Diagnosis to Care

In December, the European Parliament hosted an event gathering policymakers, patients, scientists, and industry representatives to launch "Rethinking Alzheimer’s Disease Pathway: From Diagnosis to Care."

Described by MEP Tsvetelina Penkova, the event’s host, as “not just a document, but a roadmap” offering “the real solutions we need to implement,” this initiative marks a new step toward patient-centred care.
