Coding Project — Europe: Patient safety first — EFPIA contribution

This month has seen the publication of an article from EFPIA in Pharmaceutical Executive Magazine on a verification system to ensure the safety of the supply chain in Europe.

EFPIA together with GIRP (Groupement International de la Répartition Pharmaceutique) and PGEU (Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union), the respective European organisations of wholesalers and pharmacists at EU level, will be working with the European Commission in establishing an effective system in interests of patient safety.

Properly structured, the proposed system ensures verification of product authenticity by professionals at the point of dispense and provides a modern technology solution that will enhance patient safety as well as having the potential to generate additional spillover benefits in the future.

According to statistics from European Customs, in 2010, more than 3.2 million medicines were confiscated at EU borders.

And according to the US customs, the value of counterfeit pharmaceuticals seized at US borders jumped 200% in 2011. Read the In-Pharma Technologist article.
