Responsible transparency: Getting ready for disclosure. Campaign launched to raise awareness of new financial disclosure rules

Less than 9 months left until Disclosure Code comes operationally into force

(14 April 2014 – Brussels): As part of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) Responsible Transparency initiative, a new public information campaign has been launched to boost pharmaceutical industry preparedness with complying to new disclosure rules for certain financial and other transfers of value with healthcare professionals and organisations.

EFPIA’s ‘Code on Disclosure of Transfers of Value from Pharmaceutical Companies to Healthcare Professionals and Healthcare Organisations’, approved in June 2013, requires its members to disclose specified direct payments and other transfer of values / benefits in kind made from January 2015 onwards. The Code requires all corporate members of EFPIA to disclose certain transfers of value to healthcare professionals and healthcare organisations as of 2016 regarding transfers in 2015.

Championing this initiative, EFPIA President Christopher Viehbacher said: “The industry priority is to always conduct business with strong ethical principles and the strictest integrity. We believe transparency is both a guarantee of credibility and confidence. Transparency is the basic premise in developing trust-based relationships with the public and more importantly patients.”

The campaign is aimed at all those involved with the implementation of the new rules, and those who will have to operate within the new systems. It will highlight best practices with how preparations are being made across Europe. Over the 6 last months, member associations have been working to include disclosure requirements into their local codes and companies are now preparing for how data will be captured internally and disclosed.

Speaking about the new campaign Richard Bergstrӧm, EFPIA Director General, said, “Cooperation between healthcare professionals, healthcare organisations and the pharmaceutical industry is important and necessary at all stages of the development and use of medicines to secure safety of patients and efficacy of therapy. This campaign is aimed at ensuring stakeholders throughout that chain are aware, and make the necessary preparations for change.”

The campaign will consist of a suite of materials and outreach activities running throughout the year aimed at a range of audiences involved with the Code’s implementation. These will include:

  • Online videos explaining the Code and testimonials from healthcare professionals
  • A suite of helpful information leaflets and guides
  • Stakeholder education events and webinars
  • Best practice sharing opportunities via promotion of case studies
  • A dedicated HCP/HCO social media campaign
