Successful link with Germany’s securPharm makes EMVS a reality

The European Medicines Verification System (EMVS) has passed another significant milestone in its development process by successfully implementing its first Hub connection with a Member State. This achievement is a major step along the road to securing the legitimate pharmaceutical supply chain against the risk of falsified medicines.

On July 1, the link was established between the European hub and the German repository system, managed by the German stakeholder organisation securPharm. Pharmaceutical manufacturers will now be able to upload their serialised data onto the system. At this stage 16 companies have committed to take part in the rollout of the system and to establish a connection with the Hub.

The cooperation between the European Medicines Verification Organisation (EMVO) and securPharm marks the start of the European Medicines Verification System. The essential link forms the Hub, which will ensure the pan-European interoperability of the EMVS and serve as a central entry point for companies to upload data.

It also means that the EMVO/Hub is now able to fulfil its four-pillared mission to safeguard the European supply chain against of the risk of falsified medicines. Andreas Walter, EMVO Director General ad-interim quotes: “It is now capable of comprehensibly: securing cross-border trade; ensuring interoperability between national systems; supporting the establishment of standard interfaces and providing cost savings for connecting manufacturers at a single entry point”.
